The Alaska State Community Service Commission is overseen by no fewer than 15 and no more than 25 voting Commission members appointed by the Governor.
The purpose of the ASCSC is to engage Alaskans of all ages and backgrounds in community-based service and volunteerism as a means of community and state problem solving and is to promote participation in the National AmeriCorps Program, Learn and Serve America Program and Disability Inclusion Program as required for the receipt of federal financial assistance under section 12638 of the National and Community and Service Trust Act of 1990.
.
ASCSC is funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service at the Federal Level. One of the Commission’s primary functions is to oversee grants provided to local non-profit and community agencies to run national service programs. The largest single vehicle for channeling federal resources for national and community service in Alaska is through this Governor’s commission. These funds helped Alaska recruit, train, deploy 2,500 volunteers on a full and part-time basis to address locally identified needs in education, homeland security, environmental, public safety and other human needs of Alaska residents .Our major partners are Rural CAP, Nine Star Enterprises and Southeast Alaska Guidance Association (SAGA)
