More than any other federal agency, the U.S. Department of Agriculture holds the greatest potential for seafood development. With an annual budget of almost $95 billion, USDA has a vast array of programs that support the U.S. food industry, including International Food Aid and commercial financing. To date, U.S. commercial harvesters have not had open access to these USDA programs. Great progress has been made with salmon in domestic and foreign feeding programs and lobbying has already begun for Alaska fisheries interests on USDA’s authorizing legislation, the 2007 Farm Bill. Alaska’s seafood industry must be act quickly to gain access to USDA’s programs. Mr. Schactler has been working with the Department to gain this access and will be laying out what must be done in the following months to pursue this opportunity. |
