Background
The Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (Commerce) maintains this web site on behalf of the following agencies:

  • Denali Commission
  • State of Alaska, Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development (Commerce)
  • U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Rural Development
  • US Department of Agriculture, Alaska State Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS)
  • US Economic Development Administration (EDA)

Regional strategies prepared for the above agencies may have a different focus. For example, a regional strategy developed by an economic development council will likely differ from a strategy prepared by a resource conservation and development council. However, the strategies should complement each other for the benefit of the people and resources of the region. With this understanding, Commerce, USDA Rural Development, NRCS and EDA have agreed to review and comment jointly on regional strategies prepared by:

  • Alaska Regional Development Organizations (ARDORs);
  • Empowerment Zone and Enterprise Community (EZ/EC) Program applicants and Champion Communities (regions);
  • Any grantees receiving federal or State funds for development of a regional strategy (directly or via a federal or State grant program, such as the Mini-Grant Program);
  • Economic Development Districts (EDDs);
  • An entity seeking EDA Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) designation/approval;
  • Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Councils; and
  • Any other regional entity that seeks review.

The Denali Commission's "Memorandum of Understanding" with state and federal agencies encourages the above collaboration. By jointly reviewing the regional strategies, the above agencies:

  • Will be aware of the various strategy efforts;
  • Will be more likely to give consistent advice and comments to the entity doing the strategy;
  • Will use funding available for strategies more efficiently;
  • To the extent practical, will help ensure that a strategy satisfies not only one program, but also multiple State and federal program requirements.

This web site houses those regional strategies that have been adopted at the regional level and accepted by one or more of the above agencies, in accordance with the above.

Questions about a strategy should be directed to the entity that prepared the strategy. Agency contacts are listed at the bottom of this page.
