Trade Opportunities

TO:  Alaska Sawmills
FROM:  Michael Johnson, Development Specialist
DATE:  September 9, 2002
SUBJECT:  Sitka spruce masts

We received the following unsolicited trade lead from a Dutch company seeking high quality Sitka spruce for masts on sailing ships. Given the sufficient interest, the buyer is prepared to fly to Alaska to visit a mill, inspect the lumber, and make final arrangements. If successful, more regular shipments are envisaged. Their current needs are for a series of masts 18 meters or 54 feet in length. Specifications are as follows.

Quantity: 35m3 -16,00 ft (40 ft Container)
Length: 26-40 ft
Width: Random, 6" and up
Thickness: ±75% 2"
  ±25% 1"
Grain orientation: ±25% quarter sawn
  ±25% flat sawn
  ±50% falls quarter sawn
Moisture content: ±12% KD

If kiln drying is not possible, then the buyer will consider accepting green product and drying in Holland. The grade should be aircraft quality, though no specific lumber grade is required.
