Trade Opportunities

TO:  Alaska Sawmills
FROM:  Michael Johnson, Development Specialist
DATE:  April 24, 2001
SUBJECT:  spruce logs

We received the following trade lead from a forest products importer in the United Arab Emirates. They are interested in quarterly shipments of the following product:

Species: Fresh cut, white spruce logs with bark on

Min. small end diameter: 30 cm and above

Length: 4 m with 10 cm overcut (10% volume of 8 m acceptable)

Quantity: Approximately 25,000 m3 per shipment

Grade: "Industrial"

They currently import using the JAS (Japanese Agriculture System) measurement system. If you offer a quote under standard American boardfoot measurements, you will need to provide a conversion. (FYI: 4.53 MBF log scale = approx. 1 m3) They ask for further details on grades available and time required for shipment after establishing a Letter of Credit. Price quotes should be either CFR (Cost and Freight) - to Dubai, UAE or FOB (Freight on Board) at an Alaska port.
