Renewal Instructions

  • Registered Nurse renewal schedule: November 30 of even-numbered years
  • Licensed Practical Nurse renewal schedule: September 30 of even-numbered years

All licenses and authorizations expire on November 30 or September 30 (as applicable) of even-numbered years regardless of when first issued, except new licenses issued within 90 days of the expiration date will be issued to the next biennium.

Licensees who receive their original license within 12 months of the expiration date pay the full license fee and then at their first renewal pay a prorated renewal fee (half of the current license fee).

Renewal of Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurse Anesthetists authorizations will coincide with renewal of registered nurse licenses.

You must renew your license on or before the expiration date to continue practice in Alaska. There is no grace period to practice on a lapsed license. Renewal forms will be mailed at least 60 days before the expiration date to the last address you provided to the board. You must report all new addresses to the Board in writing.

CONTINUED COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS

Before a license can be renewed, registered and practical nurse licensees must complete two of the following methods for maintaining continuing competency (Article 6 of 12 AAC).
  (a) 30 contact hours of continuing education prescribed under 12 AAC 44.610
  (b) 30 hours of participation in professional activities prescribed under 12 AAC 44.620
  (c) 320 hours of employment prescribed under 12 AAC 44.630
In lieu of meeting the above requirements, licensees may qualify for alternative methods of continuing competency pursuant 12 AAC 44.640.

Licensed Practical Nurses who receive their original license on or after October 1 of odd-numbered years or Registered Nurses who receive their original license on or after December 1 of odd-numbered years are not required to provide proof of continuing competency for their first renewal.

RANDOM AUDIT

Licensees are subject to a random mandatory audit of continuing competency. If you are selected for the audit, you will be notified in writing and given 30 days to submit proof of continuing competency claimed for the concluding licensing period.
