Placer Mining

Placer mining, long a mainstay of Alaska's gold mining industry, contributed about 8.6% of the total amount of Alaska gold production in 2011. Although Alaska has seen increasing gold production by large mines such as Fort Knox, Pogo, Kensington, and Greens Creek, placer mines still operate in many parts of the state, especially in the Eastern Interior and Western Alaska, and range in size from large mines such as Taiga Mining Co’s mine near Hughes, Alaska to smaller open-pit and underground operations.
