Continuing Education (CE) Options for
Nurses & Certified Nurse Aides

Guidelines - Contact hours should be earned in at least one of the following subject areas:

    1. Nursing practice areas and special health care problems
    2. Biological, physical, or behavioral sciences
    3. Legal or ethical aspects of health care
    4. Management or administration of health care personnel and patient care
    5. Other subjects approved by the board that are required as part of a formal nursing program that are more advanced than those completed for original licensure

Other CE Options

Education offerings by other healthcare disciplines may also apply toward your continuing education requirement. Examples are courses / classes offered by: physicians, social workers, chemical dependency therapists, activity or occupational therapists, dieticians, pharmacists, and physical therapists.

Additionally, college or university courses / classes that apply towards a degree in nursing (LPN or RN) above those courses / classes that were used for your original licensure or certification may also apply. The formula for converting college credit hours into contact hours is as follows:

  • 1 academic semester credit hour = 15 contact hours
  • 1 academic quarter credit hour – 10 contact hours
