| Nonpoint Source: Forestry |
The primary nonpoint source pollutants
caused by forestry activities include:
-
increased
sediment concentrations due to accelerated erosion
-
increased
water temperatures due to removal of overstory riparian shade
-
the
accumulation of slash and other organic debris in waterbodies,
resulting in the depletion of dissolved oxygen
-
the
increase of organic and inorganic chemical concentrations due to
harvesting and fertilizer
and pesticide applications.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified ten management
measures that address various phases of forestry operations relevant to
the control of sources of silvicultural nonpoint pollution that affect
coastal waters:
-
Preharvest
planning
-
Streamside
management areas
-
Road
construction/reconstruction
-
Road
management
-
Timber
harvesting
-
Site
preparation and forest regeneration
-
Fire
management
-
Revegetation
of disturbed areas
-
Forest
chemical management
-
Wetland
forest management
For
more information on each of these categories, please refer to Chapter
3: Management
Measures for Forestry of the
EPA’s Guidance Specifying
Management Measures for Sources
of Nonpoint
Pollution in Coastal Waters.
How This Source Category Applies to Alaska
Timber harvesting in Alaska takes place in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley,
the Kenai Peninsula, the Tongass National Forest, and on Native Corporation
Lands in Southeast Alaska.
Local Ordinances Relating to Nonpoint Source Pollution from Forestry Activities
The local ordinances in Alaska that relate to these management measures
(7-16) are linked to the following table. Each ordinance
is identified by municipality, ordinance title and reference number.
Many Alaskan municipalities
have codes of ordinances which are available online. Whenever possible,
a direct link is provided to the local ordinance online. Otherwise,
the ordinance text is available in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format. A free
copy of the application required to view and print PDF files can be
downloaded at Adobe
Acrobat Reader.
