Legislature
Directs Study
The
2003 Legislature
expressed
its intent that the
Local Boundary Commission
(LBC) and the Department
of Education
and Early Development
(DEED) address issues
relating
to the prospect
for school district
consolidation. (Section
1, ch. 83, SLA 2003;
the State operating
budget,
p. 10.) The statement
of intent calls for
the LBC and DEED
to identify
opportunities for consolidation
of school districts
through borough incorporation,
borough annexation,
and
other
boundary changes. Emphasis
is to be placed on
school districts
with fewer
than 250 students.
Additionally,
the LBC and DEED are
called up
to fully examine the
public policy advantages
of prospective consolidation,
including projected cost
savings and potential
improvements in educational
services made possible
through greater economies
of scale. Lastly, the
LBC and DEED are to report
their findings to the
Legislature no
later than February 10,
2004.
