Legislature
Directs Review of Unorganized Borough
During
the 2002 legislative session, the Alaska House
of Representatives approved "House CS for
CS for Senate Bill No. 359(FIN)" by a vote
of 35 - 0 (with 5 members absent). The Alaska
Senate approved the legislation by a vote of
19
- 0 (with 1 member absent). The legislation was
subsequently signed into law (Chapter 53, SLA
2002) by Governor Knowles. Section 3 of Chapter
53, SLA 2002 provides as follows:
Sec. 3. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska
is amended by adding a new section to read:
NEW BOROUGH INCORPORATION. The Local Boundary
Commission shall review conditions in the unorganized
borough. By the 30th day of the First Regular
Session of the Twenty-Third Alaska State Legislature,
the commission shall report to the legislature
the areas it has identified that meet the standards
for incorporation. No portion of the report
under this section constitutes a Local Boundary
Commission proposal for purposes of art. X,
sec. 12, Constitution of the State of Alaska.
The
law calls for the Commission to report its findings
to the
Legislature by February 19, 2003.
