Denali Commission Transportation Program
Administrative Agency:
Federal Agency: Denali Commission
Program Goals:
Improve surface transportation infrastructure in rural Alaska. Eligible projects include community roads, access roads to local resources and the state highway system, board roads, ports, harbors, and barge landings.
Resource Provided:
Funding for project design and construction through an annual statewide project selection process. Currently 140 projects are underway, and the program selects between 20 and 40 projects per year at an annual funding level of $21 million to $23 million per year through FY 2012.
Eligibility:
All organized governments are eligible to submit project applications. Project sponsors currently include borough, city, and tribal governments and regional tribal non-profits.
Alaska Program Status:
This program is currently funded through FY 2009 through SAFETEA-LU, the 2005 highway reauthorization act. Highway reauthorization legislation for FY 2010-2016 is currently in the start-up phase, and there is a strong likelihood SAFETEA-LU will be extended through FY2012 while new highway legislation is developed.
