Alaska Film Office
(AFO)
Administrative Agency:
State Agency: Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development (DCCED), Office of Economic Development (OED)
Program Goals:
The Alaska Film Office (AFO) promotes Alaska as a desirable location for movie, television, and commercial production. The office also administers Alaska's Transferable Tax Credit for Film Production (incentive proram).
Resource Provided:
The Alaska Film Office administers Alaska's Transferable Tax Credit for Film Production, which can be up to 44% of qualified Alaska expenditures involved in a production.
Eligibility:
Eligible projects are broadly defined as film, documentary, commercials, and video projects. At least $100,000 of qualified expenditures must be made in Alaska, although there are no salary caps or project caps. Companies do not need to be domiciled in Alaska nor do they need to hire Alaskans. However, there are additional incentives for Alaska hire, off-season production, and productions filmed in rural locations. Productions receive:
> 30% base credit for all expenditures made in Alaska,
> 10% tax credit for wages paid to Alaskan residents,
> 2% tax credit for production expenditures made between October 1 and March 30, and
> 2% tax credit for production expenditures made in a rural area,
for a combined maximum possible credit of 44% for a production with an all-Alaskan crew that films in Alaska between October and March.
Alaska Program Status:
Funding for the Transferable Tax Credit is set by legislation at a minimum of $100,000.
