The Department administers the CDBG-R program. This funding is available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The funds are awarded to the State through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Funding available under the Recovery Act has clear purposes - to stimulate the economy through measures that modernize the Nation's infrastructure, improve energy efficiency, expand educational opportunities and access to health care. HUD strongly urges grantees to use CDBG-R funds for hard development costs associated with infrastructure activities that provide services to residents or activities that promote energy efficiency and conservation through or retrofitting of existing buildings.
One CDBG-R grant was awarded to the City of Fairbanks from this funding source. The activity selected for the use of funds is to upgrade sidewalks to current ADA standards and install additional storm drain inlets on 23rd Avenue. This activity is given preference for CDBG-R funding becuase it can be started and completed by late fall 2010. It is estimated that a total of 35 temporary positions will be created during the construction phase of the project.
