Pitkas Point is located near the junction of the Yukon and Andreafsky Rivers, 5 miles northwest of St. Mary's on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. It lies 3 miles by road from the St. Mary's airport. The community
lies at approximately 62.032780° North Latitude
and -163.287780° West Longitude.

The climate is both maritime and continental. Temperatures range from -44 to 83. Precipitation measures 16 inches, with 60 inches of snowfall per year. |

| History, Culture
and Demographics |
| Eskimos who first settled there called it "Nigiklik," a Yup'ik word meaning "to the north." It was first reported in 1898 by the U.S. Geological Survey. The village was later renamed for a trader who opened a general store which was a branch of Northern Commercial Company.
A federally-recognized tribe is located in the community -- the Native Village of Pitka's Point.
The population of the community consists of 93.6%
Alaska Native or part Native.
Pitkas Point is a Yup'ik Eskimo village dependent upon a subsistence lifestyle.
During the 2000 U.S. Census,
total housing units numbered 42, and vacant housing units numbered 12.
Vacant housing units used
only seasonally numbered 4.
U.S. Census data for Year
2000 showed 33 residents
as employed. The unemployment rate at that time was
25 percent,
although
58.75 percent of
all adults were not in the work force. The median household
income was $41,875, per capita income was $10,487, and
32.23 percent of residents
were living below the poverty level.

Utilities, Schools and Health Care |
| Water is supplied by a small stream and infiltration gallery. Residents haul treated water from the washeteria and use honeybuckets. Approximately one-fourth of homes have running water for the kitchen. A few homes and facilities are connected to a community septic tank, but no homes have complete service. Electric power is provided by a transmission line from St. Mary's.
Electricity is provided by AVEC (St. Mary's).
There is one school located in the community,
attended by 16
students.
Local hospitals or health clinics include Pitka's Point Clinic (907-438-2546) or John Afcan Memorial Sub-Regional Clinic (907-438-3500) in St. Mary's.
Pitka's Point is classified as an isolated village, it is found in EMS Region 7A in the Yukon/Kuskokwim Region. Emergency Services have limited highway, river and air access. Emergency service is provided by a health aide

| Economy
and Transportation |
Employment is limited to a few year-round enterprises. Subsistence activities provide food sources, including salmon, moose, bear and waterfowl. Dog sledding is prevalent. Two residents hold commercial fishing permits. All supplies are brought in through Saint Mary's -- there are no public facilities other than a school and washeteria.
The Yukon River allows easy access by water, and most families own a skiff. There is a 17.7 mile road connecting Mountain Village with the St. Mary's airport and Andreafsky, so residents have access to the transportation facilities at St. Mary's. Snowmachines provide local winter transportation. |
