Location and Climate
The community is located on the north shore of Goodnews Bay at the mouth of Goodnews River. It is 116 air miles south of Bethel, 110 miles northwest of Dillingham, and 400 miles west of Anchorage. The community lies at approximately 59.118890° North Latitude and -161.587500° West Longitude.  (Sec. 21, T012S, R073W, Seward Meridian.)   Goodnews Bay is located in the Bethel Recording District.  The area encompasses 3.2 sq. miles of land and 0.0 sq. miles of water.  Goodnews Bay is located in a transitional climatic zone, exhibiting characteristics of both a marine and continental climate. Average precipitation is 22 inches, with 43 inches of snowfall. Summer temperatures range from 41 to 57 °F; winter temperatures are 6 to 24 °F.

History, Culture and Demographics
Yup'ik Eskimos called this village "Mumtraq." It was moved to its present location due to constant flooding and storms at the old site. Shortly thereafter, in the 1930s, a government school and post office were built. The city was incorporated in 1970. A high school was built in 1979. 

A federally-recognized tribe is located in the community -- the Native Village of Goodnews Bay. The population of the community consists of 93.9% Alaska Native or part Native. Goodnews Bay is a traditional Yup'ik Eskimo village practicing a subsistence, trapping and fishing lifestyle. The sale, importation, or possession of alcohol is banned in the village. During the 2000 U.S. Census, total housing units numbered 87, and vacant housing units numbered 16. Vacant housing units used only seasonally numbered 1. U.S. Census data for Year 2000 showed 59 residents as employed. The unemployment rate at that time was 13.24 percent, although 60.67 percent of all adults were not in the work force. The median household income was $16,250, per capita income was $6,851, and 38.98 percent of residents were living below the poverty level.


Facilities, Utilities, Schools and Health Care 
The city contracts with Goodnews Bay Water and Sewer Utility, a non-profit corporation, to operate the washeteria and central watering point, honeybucket haul, and sewage lagoon. Treated well water is hauled from the new watering point. Homes are currently not plumbed. Electricity is provided by AVEC. There is one school located in the community,  attended by 62 students. Local hospitals or health clinics include Goodnews Bay Clinic (907-967-8128).  Goodnews Bay is classified as an isolated village, it is found in EMS Region 2I in the Bristol Bay Region. Emergency Services have coastal and air access. Emergency service is provided by a health aide  Auxiliary health care is provided by Goodnews Bay First Responder Group (CHP 907-967-8512).

Economy and Transportation
The city, school, local businesses, and commercial fishing provide the majority of the income, supplemented by subsistence activities. 35 residents hold commercial fishing permits for salmon and herring roe fisheries. Many residents engage in trapping. Subsistence upon salmon, seal, walrus, birds, berries, moose, and bear is an integral part of the lifestyle.

A state-owned 2,835' long by 80' wide gravel airstrip is available for chartered or private planes year-round. There are no docking facilities, although locals use boats and skiffs extensively during the summer months. Snowmachines are the primary means of travel during the winter. Winter trails are marked along the Coastal Trail (60.3 mi.) and the Arolik Trail (60.1 mi.). Barges deliver fuel and other supplies during the summer months.
