Pedro Bay is located at the east end of Iliamna Lake, at the head of Pedro Bay, 176 air miles southwest of Anchorage on the Alaska Peninsula. The community
lies at approximately 59.787220° North Latitude
and -154.106110° West Longitude.

| History, Culture
and Demographics |
| The Dena'ina Indians have occupied this area historically. The Dena'ina warred with Russian fur traders over trade practices in the early 1800s. The community was named for a man known as "Old Pedro," who lived in this area in the early 1900s. A post office was established in the village in 1936.
A federally-recognized tribe is located in the community -- the Pedro Bay Village.
The population of the community consists of 64%
Alaska Native or part Native.
Pedro Bay is a Dena'ina Indian village with a subsistence lifestyle.
During the 2000 U.S. Census,
total housing units numbered 43, and vacant housing units numbered 26.

only seasonally numbered 26.
U.S. Census data for Year
2000 showed 27 residents
as employed. The unemployment rate at that time was
0 percent,
although
20.59 percent of
all adults were not in the work force. The median household
income was $36,750, per capita income was $18,419, and
6 percent of residents
were living below the poverty level.

Utilities, Schools and Health Care |
| Most of the occupied homes in Pedro Bay use individual wells and septic systems and are fully plumbed. Water is also derived from Iliamna Lake, and honeybuckets are used by some residents. A washeteria is available. The Village Council provides honeybucket hauling and septic pumping services and maintains the landfill. A new landfill and access road are near completion. The school organizes aluminum recycling. Many homes are used only seasonally.
Electricity is provided by Pedro Bay Village Council.
There is one school located in the community,
attended by 12
students.

and Transportation |
Most residents obtain summer employment in the Bristol Bay fishery or in Iliamna Lake tourism services. Several wilderness lodges operate in Pedro Bay. Three villagers hold commercial fishing permits. Most families depend heavily on subsistence activities, utilizing salmon, trout, moose, bear, rabbit and seal.
Pedro Bay is accessible by air and water. There is a State-owned 3,000' long by 60' wide gravel airstrip, which is undergoing major improvements. Scheduled and charter air services are available. Barge service is available from Naknek via Kvichak River. Goods are also sent by barge from Homer to Iliamna Bay on the Cook Inlet side and portaged over a 14-mile road to Pile Bay, 10 miles to the east. A dock is available. |
