Nunapitchuk is located on both banks of the Johnson River, 22 miles northwest of Bethel in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The community
lies at approximately 60.896890° North Latitude
and -162.456830° West Longitude.

Bethel Recording District.
The area encompasses 7.9
sq. miles of land and 0.7 sq. miles
of water.
The area averages 16 inches of precipitation, with snowfall of 50 inches. Summer temperatures range from 42 to 62 °F; winter temperatures run from -2 to 19 °F. |

| History, Culture
and Demographics |
| It is an Eskimo village first listed in the 1939 U.S. Census with a population of 121. The community was incorporated as a second-class city in 1969. During the 1970 U.S. Census, Nunapitchuk and the nearby villages of Atmautluak and Kasigluk were enumerated as "Akolmiut."
A federally-recognized tribe is located in the community -- the Native Village of Nunapitchuk.
The population of the community consists of 95.9%
Alaska Native or part Native.
Nunapitchuk is a Yup'ik Eskimo village, and residents are involved in commercial fishing and subsistence activities. The sale, importation, or possession of alcohol is banned in the village.
During the 2000 U.S. Census,
total housing units numbered 120, and vacant housing units numbered 15.
Vacant housing units used
only seasonally numbered 12.
U.S. Census data for Year
2000 showed 135 residents
as employed. The unemployment rate at that time was
17.18 percent,
although
50.55 percent of
all adults were not in the work force. The median household
income was $29,286, per capita income was $8,364, and
20.73 percent of residents
were living below the poverty level.

Utilities, Schools and Health Care |
| Well water is treated and supplies a central tap year-round. A flush/haul system is installed in some homes in Nunapitchuk, with water delivery and tank hauling services. Unserved households haul their own water and honeybuckets. Sewage containers are located throughout the city and are emptied into one of two sewage lagoons (one on each side of the river). The city provides piped water to the school. Teacher's housing, located in the old school, has an independent water and sewer system.
Electricity is provided by AVEC.
There is one school located in the community,
attended by 160
students.

Nunapitchuk is classified as an isolated village, it is found in EMS Region 7A in the Yukon/Kuskokwim Region. Emergency Services have river, air and floatplane access. Emergency service is provided by a health aide

and Transportation |
The school, local businesses, and the city provide most employment in Nunapitchuk. Commercial fishing and subsistence activities are a focal point of the culture. 43 residents hold commercial fishing permits for salmon and herring roe net fisheries and roe on kelp.
A state-owned 2,040' long by 60' wide gravel airstrip provides chartered or private air access year-round. A dock, small boat harbor, and seaplane landing area are available on the Johnson River. Snowmachines, ATVs, and dog sleds are used in winter months. Winter trails exist to Atmautluak (7 mi.) and Akula Heights (2.5 mi.). |
