Location and Climate
Coldfoot is located at the mouth of Slate Creek on the east bank of the Middle Fork Koyukuk River. It lies at Milepost 175 of the Dalton Highway, formerly known as the North Slope Haul Road. The community lies at approximately 67.256390° North Latitude and -150.184170° West Longitude.  (Sec. 16, T028N, R012W, Fairbanks Meridian.)   Coldfoot is located in the Fairbanks Recording District.  The area encompasses 37.0 sq. miles of land and 0.0 sq. miles of water.  The climate of the area is strongly continental. Temperatures range from -14 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Precipitation averages 10 inches, and snowfall averages 63 inches per year.

History, Culture and Demographics
Originally named Slate Creek, Coldfoot reportedly got its name in 1900 when gold prospectors traveled up the Koyukuk to this point, then got "cold feet," turned around, and departed. In 1902, Coldfoot had two roadhouses, two stores, seven saloons and a gambling house. A post office was established in 1902 and was discontinued in 1912, when the mine and town was abandoned for other mines in Nolan and Wiseman Creeks to the north. 

The population of the community consists of 0% Alaska Native or part Native. Most residents are non-Native. Children are schooled via correspondence studies. During the 2000 U.S. Census, total housing units numbered 12, and vacant housing units numbered 6. Vacant housing units used only seasonally numbered 6. U.S. Census data for Year 2000 showed 5 residents as employed. The unemployment rate at that time was 0 percent, although 0 percent of all adults were not in the work force. The median household income was $61,250, per capita income was $42,620, and 0 percent of residents were living below the poverty level.


Facilities, Utilities, Schools and Health Care 
Residents use individual wells and septic tanks. There is no community-wide system. Electricity is provided by Individual Generators. There are no state operated schools located in the community. Local hospitals or health clinics include Fairbanks hospitals.  Coldfoot is classified as an isolated village, it is found in EMS Region 1C in the Interior Region. Emergency Services have highway and air access. Emergency service is provided by volunteers  Auxiliary health care is provided by Fairbanks hospitals.

Economy and Transportation
Most employment is in government and services to road travelers. There are motels, a restaurant, a gas and service station, a RV park and dump station, a State Trooper, a State Fish & Wildlife officer, and a U.S. Bureau of Land Management field office.

Coldfoot is located on the Dalton Highway. There is a State-owned 4,000' long by 100' wide gravel runway.
