Community Sanitation Overview:
The majority of residents (49 homes) have household plumbing and most use individual wells. Twelve houses do not have water or sewer service-some haul water from the community center and a few are served by a spring well catchment system. Septic tanks, leechate fields, and public sewage lagoon are used for sewage disposal. The North Shore uses eleven shared effluent pumps (REP units) which discharge into a piped system. there are three landfill sites. The North shore landfill is being relocated; the South shore landfill has an incinerator but is unfenced. A third landfill is located two miles from the South shore, on the West side of the Aleknagik-Dillingham road. Nushagak Electric in Dillingham provides electricity to Aleknagik. 
RUBA Status & Activities This Qtr:
The city administrator successfully completed a RUBA Financial Management training event in Dillingham on April 3-7, 2006. Concerning water/sewer utility management, the city council met with Alaska Native Tribal Health Corporation (ANTHC) officials to discuss a 65% draft water/sewer master plan with representatives from ANTHC. In recent months RUBA discussed utility management and the likelihood of a RUBA Assessment of management indicators, a grant condition for most water/sewer projects, with the city administrator. RUBA met with ANTHC engineering staff during the quarter and will maintain contact with Aleknagik and ANTHC officials in the coming months as water/sewer renovations plans are refined. The city is facing enforcement challenges at the local landfill. The mayor addressed the general public in a radio call-in program late in the quarter to reiterate a message concerning penalties for violating the city's landfill use laws. Apparently nonresidents of Aleknagik without a landfill permit are dumping garbage at the City of Aleknagik landfill, located on the road between Dillingham and Aleknagik. In community development events, the city held a ground-breaking for the new village health clinic on June 10, 2006. The new clinic will be located by the Municipal Building on the North Shore and is expected to be completed next spring.
