Community Sanitation Overview:
The Native Village of Goodnews Bay operates a washeteria central watering point, provides for honeybucket haul, and has a sewage lagoon. The tribe, the policy making body for the utility, assumed water/sewer utility management in August 2005. Currently, treated well water is hauled from the watering point at the washeteria/clinic facility. Most homes are currently not plumbed. A piped water and gravity sewer system with plumbing for 70 + homes is under construction. The project funding will plumb homes including installation of fixtures. 
RUBA Status & Activities This Qtr:
A RUBA assessment of management indicators was completed January 10, 2007. The Goodnews utility as managemend by the YKHC-RUC meets all essential indicators at this time. This assessment only pertains to the management of the utility. Starting in late 2006, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation-(YKHC) Rural Utility Cooperative (RUC), assumed management from the village council for community water/sewer services. The RUC now operates the honey bucket haul system, washeteria, and watering point on the council's behalf. RUC program staff have worked to address deficient RUBA assessment indicators and aim to keep the sanitation project on track. The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) is the lead agency on the sanitation project and is presently installing plumbing into private residences. During the quarter, utility collection rates were low and the utility is reportedly being subsidized by RUC grant funding. In city matters, the mayor resigned during the quarter and the vice mayor is presently acting in the mayoral capacity. The city continues struggling financially but is overseeing public safety facility improvements via Coastal Villages Resource Fund monies. 
RUBA Activities for the Coming Qtr:
RUBA will maintain contact with the water/sewer utility and the YKHC RUC as they work to maintain compliance with grant conditions including the RUBA Assessment of Management Capacity Indicators.
